Roopkund Trek

Roopkund trek is one of the favorite spot for trekkers that attract a wide number of trekkers towards the Himalayan mountain range. Located in the Gharwal Region of the Uttarakhand, Roopkund Trek takes the trekkers to explore the true Himalayan beauty accustomed with the high mountains, deepest forests and glistering rivers.

Roopkund is an all-famous glacier lake that is renowned due to placement of more than 500 skeletons of humans at the edge of the lake. Located in the lap of Trishul Massif, this lake carries the human skeletons at its bank that is taken to be the remains of the people of Paleolithic age. This lake is positioned in Himalayas at an altitude of 4800 meters. Primarily located in Gharwal, it offers the best trekking point close to the hill stations such as Nainital and Kathgodam. Visitors visit this locale not only from the country but from abroad also.

Legendary History of The Roopkund Trek

The site of the Roopkund Lake offers the surprising view of the remains of the human’s skeletons. It is believed that the skeletons belong to the heroes of the earlier times. Some people have found out the skeletons of animals also with the human skeletons that report about the instances of the skeletons somewhere from 12th century to 15th century.

In 1942, the discovery of these human skeletons comes into existence by a Nanda Devi Reserve Ranger, Mr. H K Madhwal. After discovery, numerous scientists have conducted several researches to ascertain the information about the human skeletons. Some predict that the remains belong to the people of 850AD while some predict about the features and morphological structure of the remains. The researchers have also predicted about the reason of the death of so many people due to epidemic or some hailstorm. Though large of humans skeletons perished due to natural environment, still more than 500 skeletons can be seen on the edge of the lake.

Best Time to Undertake Roopkund Trek

The best time to undertake Roopkund trek is divided into two seasons. Either you can carry on the trek before Monsoon between May and June or you can undertake the trek after the Monsoon between August and September.

During May-June trek, you may find the greener Bugyals and defrosted lake that allows you a clear view of the skeletons. On the other side, if you choose to trek during August and September month, you may find little browner yet beautiful Bugyals with frozen lake that depart you from seeing the skeletons. Though the snow displayed a different picturesque location, but if you want to see those skeletons, you must make the wise choice.

How to Reach Roopkund Trek

By Air: You can reach the Jolly Grant Airport of Dehradun which is well connected with Delhi. From Dehradun, you can reach Rishikesh which takes you to Karnaprayag from where the starting point of the Roopkund trek i.e., Debal is located at an easy motor able distance of about 57 kms.

By Rail: Roopkund is easily connected with the Haridwar and Rishikesh railway stations that are simultaneously connected with trains of other major Indian cities.

By Road: Similar to rail transport, the road transport to Roopkund is associated with Haridwar, Rishikesh and Srinagar with the road transport of other major Indian cities.
